PAPYRUS is our Charity of the Year

Clare Knowles, Marketing Consultant27 January 2020

You may have already seen from our social media posts that we’ve started the year with a commitment to fundraise for a newly chosen charity. We selected PAPYRUS (Prevention of Young Suicide) as our 2020 Charity of the Year. We’re looking forward to getting involved with a variety of events and challenges to raise money for them. But as well as that, we will help to spread the message about all the wonderful work they do to save young lives from suicide. Find out more…

About PAPYRUS (Prevention of Young Suicide)
PAPYRUS is the leading national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. Founded in 1997 by a group of parents who had all tragically lost a child to suicide, PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives by shattering the stigma around suicide. They support and equip young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond appropriately to suicidal behaviour.

PAPYRUS provides confidential support and advice to young people struggling with thoughts of suicide, as well as anyone worried about a young person through their helpline - HOPELINEUK and engages with communities and volunteers in suicide prevention projects, delivering training and awareness-raising programmes to individuals and community groups. They also aim to shatter the stigma that remains around suicide and shape national social policy making significant contributions to local and regional implementation of suicide prevention strategies.
PAPYRUS receives no central government funding and relies on donations to help them continue this valuable work. A donation of just £5 pays to service one call, text or email to HOPELINEUK, which can help a young person stay safe from suicide. Just one call really could save a life.

Why we chose PAPYRUS as our Charity of the Year
There were a couple of factors that were important to us when choosing a charity to work alongside for the year. Firstly, we wanted a smaller charity who had a local presence. Secondly, we wanted that charity to have relevance to our team and wider audience. Thirdly, we wanted to work with a charity with whom we can help to make a real difference. We felt PAPYRUS ticked all those boxes.
PAPYRUS is a charity that’s still growing – whilst the charity was formed in 1997, the last five years has seen them grow from having one office in Warrington to now having offices in Birmingham, London and Cardiff. Our team is made up of a lot of young people and working with lawyers, we’re aware of the high stress environment around a career in law. We really feel a year spent helping PAPYRUS will make a big difference, both to the charity themselves and the wider legal community.

Our fundraising calendar of events
Some of the Interlink team made a recent visit to the PAPYRUS headquarters in Warrington. Here we got to learn more about how our fundraising will help, new fundraising initiatives PAPYRUS have for this year plus the excellent support the PAPYRUS team can give us with our own fundraising. We’re now busy putting together a calendar of events!

We have some great things in the pipeline already. We want to fill the year with a mix of individual challenges and team events, plus activities we can do locally, incorporating some of our clients. Already pencilled in is a team ‘Pot lunch’ at the end of February where we all bring in something sweet or savoury for lunch and donate to PAPYRUS before tucking in.
We’ve got some of the guys taking part in the Business Fives football tournament in March, which we’re going to put a fundraising twist on. There are several challenges available through PAPYRUS which we’ll have a couple of team members get involved in, meanwhile we hope to do a team cycling challenge in the Summer. This will see us ride to a chosen European destination, each team within the business competing to see who can cycle the furthest. We hope to do this on a static bike in the office, with a bucket for collecting cash as much as teams getting their own sponsorship. We’ll also have monthly Dress Down Fridays with a donation to PAPYRUS required. We’re looking forward to getting the team involved and raising lots of money!

Support Adam to grow his hair!
Adam is no stranger to a charity challenge – we’ve seen him grow moustaches a couple of times, eat as many dough balls as possible and even go sober for a whole month. This year, for PAPYRUS he has already pledged to keep clear of the barbershop and yes, let his hair grow! As Adam himself says about his latest fundraising efforts, “…the current one is growing my hair, which, whilst slower to grow, still has the curl effect.” He’s a week into his challenge and we’ll be sharing regular pictures of his hair growth. If you’d like to see him steer clear of the barbershop for another week, please make a donation to our team JustGiving page here - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/interlinkrecruitment2020.

Keep an eye out for news of our fundraising events and get involved if you can! #teaminterlink
